The treatment Case of hiccup sign in Stroke patient



Abstract
The 47 year old male patient was admitted to the hospital because of 6-day history of the numbness of right side of face and left side of body, hiccups and mild dizziness. Hiccup was so severe as to limit daily sleeping time. These were the main symptoms of clinical manifestations of the infarction at brainstem, especially pons or medulla oblongata. Brain MRI was performed to evaluate the infarction at medulla oblongata. The patient reported no other illness and medication before.
In oriental medicine, it is thought that the main etiologies of hiccups are deficiency of Ki(energy) of the stomach, retention of phlegm and fluid, upward perversion in the functioning of the stomach, the whole body sign such as pulse, tongue condition and face complexion considered, retention of phlegm and fluid was thought of the etiology of hiccups in this case. Hiccup was treated by Yijintanggamibang and moxibustion at CV12, CV17, and Liv14. For about 4 days after treatment, the patient¢¥s hiccups disappeared and sleeping time was prolonged significantly.
